The new product ProViotic Cardio, combining the action of a powerful natural antioxidant (resveratrol) and a Bulgarian probiotic bacterium (Lactobacillus plantarum GLP3 ), is being included in a study on patients at the Cardiology Clinic of the "Tsaritsa Yoanna - ISUL" University Hospital, headed by Prof. Dr Asen Gudev. The product is a joint development of the Centre for Applied Research and Innovation at Sofia University and Harvard Medical School.
It is intended for people with high bad cholesterol who, for support, would prefer the natural ingredients of traditional Bulgarian foods over chemical medicines of the statin type. The combination of resveratrol from red wine and lactic acid bacteria brings together two ingredients from traditional foods in one food supplement that can be part of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in people worldwide. Among the factors for these diseases are excess cholesterol and high levels of triglycerides in the blood. The so-called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) acts in the human body and plays a role in regulating the pressure of the blood on the vessel walls. Suppressing this enzyme can reduce the pressure on the blood vessels. A large number of such inhibitory peptides have been isolated from fermented Bulgarian products, including the native pickles where the beneficial bacterium Lactobacillus plantarum GLP3 is found.
Resveratrol, isolated from red wine, increases the production of nitric oxide (NO), which dilates the blood vessels. It neutralises free radicals (unstable molecules that need one electron). To obtain an electron, free radicals attack stable molecules, disrupting their integrity and strength. In turn, the attacked molecules seek to compensate for the loss, and so a chain reaction forms with a destructive effect on the living cell. This reaction, which is among the main culprits of health problems in humans, is blocked by resveratrol.
